David James Champion, 62 can now be identified after new legislation that came into effect at midnight Tuesday lifted the longstanding prohibition against identifying people charged with prescribed sexual offences before their cases have been committed to trial. Champion appeared in Brisbane Magistrates Court on Tuesday, for his committal hearing and it was adjourned until January 25 for a legal argument about whether a document is protected counselling communication and whether other documents are protected by legal privilege. The prosecutor told the court that it was “unfortunate that further delay be caused in these committal proceedings, but it seems to be unavoidable”. Court documents state that Champion was charged on March 24 last year with two counts of sexual assault and one count of rape of the man, and Champion, fromSydney’s Haymarket, first appeared in court in Brisbane on May 10 last year.As part of his bail conditions Champion is allowed to live in Sydney but banned from having contact with his alleged victim.
